Naturally untreated, unnaturally treated or naturally treated?

August 21, 2024

Perhaps you've also noticed a greater focus on a natural look. High-profile celebrities are pictured without makeup, confessing to having had traces of previous facial treatments removed. Natural = untreated is the message.

Unnaturally treated

At the same time, unnaturally treated results abound on SoMe - photos and posts with so-called pillow/puffy faces, overtreated influencers with no distinctive features, who largely have the same traits - foxy eyes, large pronounced cheekbones, lack of facial expressions, full lips, small pointed chin and small nose. In editorial-controlled media, articles and debates regularly appear that problematize the increasing demand for such treatments and body pressure among young people, with reference to the above-mentioned results.

Illegal marketing

To this equation must be added the fact that Norwegian clinics and therapists are not allowed to post before/after pictures of so-called cosmetic procedures. As we all know, there are no national borders on the internet, which means that such images will come from operators abroad or from Norwegian operators who do not comply with current legislation. This can also mean that it is not the aesthetically natural results that are promoted.

Misrepresentation

As a therapist, I think it's great that a natural look is recognized as attractive and desirable. At the same time, I don't recognize myself in this «naturally untreated» or «unnaturally treated» presentation. I am both provoked and frustrated by such one-sided, often ignorant, publications.

I recently came across an article in a local newspaper claiming that there are no longer so many people requesting cosmetic medical skin treatments, due to the desire for a natural look. My first thought when I saw the article was that it shows little insight into and knowledge of what such treatments can and should be. It's a shame that in a click-driven media world, it's such stereotypical representations that get the most space, as the picture is much more nuanced.

Naturally treated

Of course, there is much to criticize in terms of unnatural and aesthetically unfortunate results. However, with solid knowledge of facial anatomy, ageing processes, techniques and products, it is entirely possible to achieve a naturally treated result. The goal is to preserve and enhance your own features, look more natural, get that little extra touch, and - not least - to achieve and maintain good skin health. This is what I find that the majority of customers are looking for.
